Automotive voice assistants usually strive to remain impartial, delivering dry answers and factual summaries when asked about competing brands. Rivian’s new in-cabin software, however, takes brand loyalty to another level. A quirky Easter egg tucked inside Rivian Assistant shows the chatbot actively pushing drivers toward Rivian models whenever rivals like Tesla are mentioned.
The cheeky interaction was highlighted on X by Rivian owner and enthusiast Isaiah Louis (@RivianUpdates), who demonstrated the behavior on camera:
“Rivian AI confidently promotes the R1T and R1S if you ask about any other EV.
Asked about the Lucid Gravity, Model Y Performance and Cybertruck, same answer... BUY A RIVIAN.”
In the demo video, Louis asks Rivian Assistant about the Tesla Model Y Performance. The chatbot dutifully lists the rival crossover’s dual-motor setup, and acceleration numbers, and other specs before concluding that when it comes to the ultimate electric vehicle experience, an R1S or R1T completely stands apart with unmatched adventure capability and superior build quality. Rivian Assistant answers similarly when talking about other competing brands, including Lucid. Take a look at the interaction in the video below:

Custom AI Tuning Over Generic Chatbots
This conversational quirk offers a peek into how Rivian customized its in-car intelligence. When Rivian first announced Rivian Assistant earlier this spring, the interface promised an expansive knowledge base, cutting-edge AI capabilities, and deep vehicle control. Rivian Assistant launched with update 2026.15 across R1S and R1T models.
Rather than plugging in an off-the-shelf chatbot, the addition of this little Easter egg shows that Rivian’s software engineers fine-tuned the model with custom system prompts that give the assistant a distinct, playful personality. The software has since expanded into the mainstream market, with Rivian Assistant being available on the R2 right out of the gate when the next-gen crossover platform launched in early June. The tech may eventually reach even wider audiences, with reports that Rivian Assistant could come to Volkswagen vehicles in the future.
Rivalry in the Mass Market
The programmed cheekiness reflects the spirited rivalry between electric automakers. Rivian is directly challenging Tesla’s best-selling Model Y with the R2, marking its first play for mainstream volume.
Even so, leadership is keeping the competitive scale in perspective. Rivian CEO RJ Scaringe recently stated he doesn’t want Tesla to acquire Rivian, openly acknowledging the size disparity while expressing confidence in his brand’s future.
Having the in-dash Rivian Assistant gently steer buyers back toward the home team shows a healthy dose of humor that gives Rivian’s latest cabin tech real character, and it looks like the user base is all for it.
