Rivian R2 Launches on June 9th

By Karan Singh
Rivian Wave

Rivian has confirmed that June 9th is the day that the much-awaited R2 officially arrives in customers’ driveways. This confirmation came via an email to reservation holders, followed by a post on X confirming the date and a Rivian Story with additional FAQ details.

The June 9th Rollout

Rather than relying on a staggered release schedule with a few vehicles delivered to customers sporadically as the factory allows, Rivian is pushing three major milestones for the 9th of June.

First, early reservation holders will officially receive emails requesting confirmation of their order, which should have been finalized via the online configurator. You do not need to confirm your order immediately, but the pricing you initially configured with or the Launch Edition trim availability may not be available if you wait.

Rivian has also confirmed that the delivery window for the Launch Edition is now 2 to 6 weeks for those who confirm their orders.

Second, Rivian Spaces across the United States will open their doors for prospective buyers to get behind the wheel and experience the R2 firsthand. That includes demo drives, not just a static showroom display.

Finally, and most importantly, the very first production R2s will be physically delivered to customers.

Tesla Model Y Competitor

While the Rivian R2 isn’t intended to be a direct Tesla Model Y competitor, it indirectly competes with Tesla’s best-selling vehicle because they're both EVs with similar prices and ranges, and both companies have a strong focus on software.

Both companies create arguably the best software available in any vehicle, and there’s a lot to like about both vehicles when you’re looking for a new, long-range EV with a strong focus on software.

Rivian recently launched its AI assistant, which is leaps ahead of Tesla’s current implementation of Grok. They also have a slew of upcoming software features, such as group texting support, an App Store, and more.

How Order Invitations Will Work

Invitations will go out on a rolling basis starting on June 9th, sent out in batches. Reservation timestamps and delivery locations are primary factors for invites, with areas around Rivian Service Centers receiving invites sooner than those farther away.

In addition, current and previous R1 owners, as well as those with expiring R1 leases, will be prioritized.

The first wave of deliveries will be focused on the Launch Edition, which starts at $57,990 and comes with the dual-motor Performance trim.

Rivian Confirms Teen Mode and Valet Mode Coming in Early 2027

By Karan Singh
Rivian Wave

During his recent Reddit Ask Me Anything (AMA) session, Rivian's Chief Software Officer, Wassym Bensaid, provided another update on two highly requested software features. While owners will have to wait a little longer than initially expected for Teen Mode and Valet Mode, the delay comes with a technological silver lining.

Rebuilding the Foundation

When asked by the community for an update on Teen Mode, a feature originally promised back in 2022, Bensaid was transparent about the development process. He admitted the features had been pushed back, but explained that the delay is due to a massive backend overhaul.

"We made the decision to revisit the entire architecture to enable these features to be based on a new foundation with Cloud profiles and Digital Key," Bensaid told the community. He noted that taking the time to rebuild this foundation will help Rivian maintain and continue upgrading the infotainment experience.

Tying these upcoming features directly to Cloud Profiles and Digital Keys ensures that Rivian can build a much more robust and capable security system.

This new architecture means the vehicle will recognize exactly who is unlocking the door via their specific phone key. The vehicle can then automatically apply the correct driving restrictions and profile preferences before the driver even sits behind the wheel.

Teen Mode

Once this new backend architecture is complete, Rivian will officially roll out "Teen Mode." This feature is designed to function similarly to Tesla's Parental Controls.

With Teen Mode active, parents will be able to lock the vehicle into specific safety parameters tailored for younger or less experienced drivers. This will likely include capping the maximum speed and severely reducing the vehicle's rapid acceleration. It will also allow owners to completely lock out aggressive, high-performance driving options like Rally or Drift modes, among other features.

Valet Mode

A dedicated Valet Mode will launch alongside this feature and operate on the same cloud-based architecture. This will give owners peace of mind by ensuring parking attendants cannot access personal data.

Valet Mode typically removes access to certain features that can reveal someone’s address or personal details, such as Home and Work locations, navigation history, calendar, and more.

Tesla’s Valet Mode also limits acceleration and lowers the top speed to 70 mph, preventing high-performance joy rides.

The New Timeline

Bensaid acknowledged that having to share delayed timelines is exactly why hosting open AMAs can be difficult. However, he assured owners that the software engineering team is actively building this new profile foundation right now.

Based on the current internal roadmap, both Teen Mode and Valet Mode are officially slotted for an early 2027 release.
