Rivian Introduces Captain Chairs in New 2027 R1S [Photos and Features]

Rivian has introduced its 2027 R1S, and with it, it’s introduced an option buyers have wanted for years — captain’s chairs. The 2027 model can now be optionally ordered with two captain chairs in the middle row, replacing the bench seat.

The new option is exclusive to the 2027 R1S, which just went live this morning. The captain’s chairs come in as a $1,500 option. However, Rivian is only offering its new seating layout with Rivian Premium Audio and the Dynamic Glass Roof. The Premium trim is the only one that doesn’t include those features, so if you’re looking to add captain’s chairs to the Premium model, it’ll actually run you $4,500 with premium audio and the dynamic glass roof included.

While the captain’s chairs are optional on some trims and interior colors, others include them as standard, making the previous 7-seater vehicle only available in the Premium trim, or in the Black Mountain interior on other trim levels.

The biggest appeal of the captain’s chairs is how they open up access to the third row, while also giving third-row passengers some additional leg room by allowing them to stretch into the aisle. To keep the aisle accessible, the captain’s chairs feature a stowable armrest and a cup holder that can be tucked away. Rivian chose to optimize comfortable for second row passengers as the width of the captain’s chairs are fairly wide, however, with the armrests and cup holders out, the third room becomes almost inaccessible without having to step over the With the armrests and cup holders out, the third-row becomes almost

The new seats are heated, much like Rivian’s second-row bench seating; however, they do not include ventilation like the front passenger seats.

Much like Tesla’s Model Y L, Rivian’s captain’s chairs fold flat so that they don’t compromise the cargo room when all seats are folded flat.

Retrofit

While the captain’s chairs appear like a simple change to the model, Rivian has already confirmed that, unfortunately, the captain’s chairs can not be retrofitted in previous models.

A lot of owners have wanted Rivian to add captain’s chairs, and Rivian has finally come through. Unless you need the 7-seat version or don’t normally use the third row, captain’s chairs are likely the way to go, as they don’t sacrifice cargo room and make daily use of the third row much easier.

Rivian Adds Second Shift for R2 Production in Illinois

By Nehal Malik
Rivian Wave

Rivian is stepping up production of its all-new midsize SUV as customer demand scales up. The electric vehicle startup is preparing to add a second shift to the R2 assembly line at its factory in Normal, Illinois, by the end of the third quarter.

The manufacturing acceleration comes shortly after Rivian officially began R2 customer deliveries in early June. During a recent investor call, Rivian founder and CEO RJ Scaringe confirmed that hundreds of suppliers are coordinating to ramp up production capacity smoothly alongside the Illinois facility (via InsideEVs).

Ramping Production for Mass-Market Demand

The R2 serves as Rivian’s first mass-market play to compete directly with Tesla’s Model Y (check out our full comparison between the R2 and Model Y, as well as recent efficiency testing between the two). Initial momentum is already showing on financial balance sheets, as Rivian handily outpaced its Q2 delivery outlook off the back of early R2 handoffs — even though June deliveries represented less than a month of customer shipments.

Rivian Wave

Strong early interest in the R2 includes over 200,000 reservations and 57,000 completed demo drives. Scaringe noted that many buyers are transitioning away from gas vehicles for the first time:

“The U.S. automotive marketplace is starved for high-quality EV choice, and I believe R2 is an attractively priced option for everyday adventures that will resonate with a broad set of consumers.”

To keep up with early reservation holders, adding a double shift helps the company push toward profitability on its newest platform.

Lineup Expansion and Georgia Factory Plans

Seeing enough demand to warrant opening a second assembly shift bodes well for cheaper R2 models coming down the pipeline. Customers are currently taking delivery of the top-spec R2 Performance, which features dual-motor All-Wheel Drive, 656 horsepower, 330 miles of EPA-estimated range, a native Tesla-style NACS port, and a starting price of $57,990.

Rivian Wave

Buyers looking at lower price points will have to wait for a while, though. Rivian plans to launch a less-performant (and more affordable) Premium trim by the end of this year, followed by an entry-level $45,000 Standard Rear-Wheel Drive variant in 2027 that’s expected to deliver around 275 miles of range.

While the Normal, Illinois, plant is handling early R2 volume, long-term scaling relies on additional real estate. Rivian is currently constructing a second factory in Georgia, which is scheduled to begin mass-producing the full R2 lineup (as well as other future models) in 2028. Adding shifts in Illinois ensures production volume keeps climbing alongside demand until the second facility comes online.
