Rivian drivers who rely on real-time crowdsourced traffic data are getting a welcome addition to their in-car navigation. The adventure EV maker is preparing to introduce native Waze alerts directly into its navigation software across both its R1 and R2 model lines.
Rivian Chief Software Officer Wassym Bensaid confirmed the upcoming feature on X, sharing a preview of the interface running on a vehicle display:
“Real-time alerts from Waze are coming to R1 and R2 in-vehicle navigation, starting with speed cameras and police reports in the 2026.31 OTA update. More data and alerts to follow!”
While a specific rollout date for the 2026.31 firmware release hasn’t been announced, the update represents a major milestone for Rivian software. Alongside Waze alerts, 2026.31 will officially bring RivianOS 2.0 to Gen 1 and Gen 2 R1T and R1S vehicles, unifying the software stack with the new R2.
Crowdsourced Road Alerts on the Center Screen
The new integration builds on previous mapping updates. Last summer, Rivian rolled out Google Maps support in an update for its mobile app, laying the foundation for deeper navigation features.
Google Maps powers Rivian’s navigation system. Because Google owns Waze, Rivian can pull road data directly into the built-in route planner and give drivers real-time information on hazards without needing a smartphone mounted to the dashboard. The initial rollout focuses on alerts for active speed traps and reported police vehicles, with additional crowdsourced data like road construction, lane closures, and general traffic hazards expected in later updates.
Official Waze integration arrives just a couple of months after Rivian kicked off R2 customer deliveries, ensuring early owners of its next-generation crossover platform get the capability right out of the gate. Early UI previews don’t include any evidence of the ability to report hazards directly from the touchscreen, though driver submission tools could arrive in future updates.
A Long-Awaited Tool for Tesla Drivers
Rivian is positioning the R2 as its first true Model Y competitor, and the arrival of native Waze alerts on Rivian displays highlights a feature Tesla owners have spent years asking for.
Tesla continues to bypass smartphone mirroring platforms like Apple CarPlay and Android Auto in favor of its own custom infotainment OS, locking users out of mirroring Waze to their vehicle screens. While reports show Tesla is working with Apple on native CarPlay integration, the lack of a release timeline leaves drivers without built-in hazard reports.
In the meantime, Tesla drivers wanting Waze navigation often run the app on their phones or use workarounds like the Tesla Android project to get CarPlay on the central display.
By embedding Waze alerts directly into its cabin software, Rivian is offering a clean middle ground between phone mirroring and standalone navigation, making daily commutes easier across its entire vehicle lineup.
