Rivian is working hard to ensure that its original vehicle owners are not left behind as the company transitions to its next-generation hardware platform. Following the recent launch of the official R2 order configurator for reservation holders, Rivian Chief Software Officer Wassym Bensaid hosted an interactive Ask Me Anything (AMA) session on Reddit focused entirely on the R2 software platform.
During the session, a community member asked if the upcoming R2 and legacy R1 vehicles would share a common code stack or require entirely separate software maintenance. Bensaid delivered an exciting confirmation for current owners.
One Operating System to Rule Them All
While the upcoming R2 features much faster infotainment and AI processing hardware, Rivian is successfully optimizing its new code to run on older, less powerful silicon.
"Our goal is to create a core software Operating System that provides a unified brand experience irrespective of the hardware that may differ between vehicle platforms. RivianOS 2.0 will be introduced on R2 vehicles at launch, and will come to R1 vehicles later this year," Bensaid confirmed on Reddit.
This unified software approach means that R1 drivers will gain access to the same system maturity that’s dropping with the new midsize SUV platform. Other major highlights from the AMA include plans to deploy template-based SDKs to build a curated third-party app ecosystem on RivianOS 2.0, as well as a highly anticipated live cabin Pet Cam feature.
Expanding Beyond Rivian Badges
Maintaining a single core operating system is a highly calculated business move. Because the software architecture is completely scalable, RivianOS 2.0 can easily expand beyond the brand's own electric trucks and SUVs.
This core framework could serve as the digital foundation for Rivian’s massive tech-sharing venture with Volkswagen. This setup will see Audi and other VW-owned brands adopt Rivian’s internal architecture starting in 2028.
As R2 mass production hits its stride in Normal, Illinois, ahead of the first Performance Launch Package deliveries later this spring, Rivian is proving that its tech stack can scale effectively. By creating a uniform digital experience that supports older customer vehicles and could even extend to global automotive partners simultaneously, the young company is establishing itself as a true heavyweight in automotive software design.
