A pre-production Rivian R2, equipped with a LiDAR sensor on the front windshield, has been spotted navigating public roads near Rivian’s headquarters in Irvine, California. The uncamouflaged prototype offers the first real-world look at Rivian’s next-generation sensor suite.
Currently, Rivian is producing and delivering the initial wave of Launch Edition R2 vehicles without LiDAR hardware, with no retrofit option for these vehicles in the future. Instead, Rivian’s executive team has confirmed that it intends to introduce the sensor to consumer vehicles in late 2026 or early 2027. The recent sighting suggests that validation of this hardware is actively underway, with early engineering vehicles on the road today.
Erasing the LiDAR Bump
The prototype found in Irvine looks quite close to a refined, production-ready variant. Unlike the prominent, protruding “taxi bumps” seen on legacy vehicles like Volvo’s EX90 or Waymo vehicles, the R2’s LiDAR unit is elegantly integrated.
It sits flush within a narrow indentation just above the windshield, preserving the aerodynamics and aesthetics of the R2 without any jarring overhangs. It’s a sleek design that will offer autonomy improvements without sacrificing range or aesthetics.
Revenue First, Autonomy Later
Rivian’s staggered rollout for the R2 is a sign of a delicate balancing act. By launching the initial R2 variants without the Gen 3 autonomy hardware, Rivian has been able to expedite production and bring the vehicle to market much sooner, helping to generate immediate revenue.
While Launch Edition includes a lifetime subscription to Autonomy+, Rivian has conceded that R2 vehicles without LiDAR will likely not be capable of “eyes off” autonomy.
The Early Adopter Dilemma
The Irvine sighting may make things even more challenging for current reservation holders. Because Rivian has indicated that the LiDAR suite cannot be retrofitted to early R2 builds, customers must choose between the Launch Edition with perks now or the LiDAR version for future-proofing later.
We’ve put together an in-depth guide on the R2 LiDAR purchase dilemma that you can read to help you decide whether to purchase a Launch Edition now or hold out for a version with LiDAR.
