Rivian Launches R2 Order Configurator

Rivian is taking a massive step toward becoming a mainstream automaker. After months of anticipation, the company has officially launched the R2 order configurator. This release allows those on the R2 waitlist to finally spec out their vehicles and prepare for the production ramp-up.

While Rivian recently began mass production at its Normal, Illinois, factory — overcoming recent storm damage that threatened the timeline — this update provides the clearest look yet at the pricing and options for the SUV that will likely define the brand's future. The R2 is not just a smaller SUV; it is built on an entirely new platform with a unique "Drop Glass" rear window that rolls down into the liftgate, a new software experience, a faster infotainment system with dedicated AI hardware to get the most out of the new Rivian Assistant, and more.

R2 Performance

The R2 Performance is the "halo" trim of the lineup and the first one that will reach customers. Rivian says deliveries are expected to start later this spring. To entice early adopters, the first wave of orders will include an exclusive Launch Package. This package features a lifetime subscription to Autonomy+ — Rivian’s suite of advanced driver assistance features, a launch key fob, a tow package, and access to the unique "Launch Green" paint.

Starting at $57,990 with the default Esker Silver paint and 21" Liquid Tungsten All-Season tires, the Performance trim is an All-Wheel Drive powerhouse, delivering a 0-60 mph time of just 3.6 seconds and 656 horsepower. It maintains a healthy range of 330 miles on a single charge. Rivian is only offering the Black Crater Signature interior option at launch. Here are all the add-ons you can spec out your R2 Performance order with:

R2 Premium

For those looking for a balance of luxury and value, the R2 Premium is slated to begin deliveries in late 2026. Priced at $53,990, this trim comes standard with All-Wheel Drive and provides 450 horsepower. It matches the Performance trim's 330 miles of range but offers a slightly more relaxed 4.6-second 0-60 mph time.

The R2 Premium comes standard with the Esker Silver exterior, 20" Bicolor Carbon All-Season wheels, and the Black Crater Signature interior, with the configurator implying that the Coastal Cloud Signature option will be available by the time the R2 Premium begins deliveries. Unlike the Performance trim, the Premium version does not include the Launch Package as standard, meaning some high-tech driving features will be paid upgrades.

R2 Standard (Long Range)

The third trim listed in the configurator is the R2 Standard, which appears to be the "Standard Long Range" variant originally announced as part of the lineup back in March. This is the range leader of the group, boasting an estimated 345 miles on a single charge.

Starting at $48,490, it comes standard with Esker Silver paint, Rivian’s Black Crater interior (lacks the wood accents of the Signature version), 19" Machined Graphite All-Season wheels, and a Rear-Wheel Drive setup that produces 350 horsepower. However, an All-Wheel Drive configuration is available for an additional $3,500, boosting power to 450 horsepower but reducing range to 330 miles. Deliveries for this variant are currently estimated for sometime in 2027.

The Missing $45,000 Base Trim

The most notable absence from the configurator is the fabled $45,000 base model. This is arguably the most anticipated version of the R2, as it brings the Rivian brand into a much more affordable (and competitive) price bracket. Rivian previously announced that this base trim would feature roughly 275 miles of range and start at that coveted $45,000 mark.

According to Rivian’s launch timeline, this trim is likely coming in late 2027. Rivian is likely prioritizing higher-margin trims first to help the company reach profitability before it takes on the Model Ys of the world. While it’s not in the configurator today, it remains the "carrot on a stick" for many budget-conscious EV shoppers interested in Rivian’s adventure-first identity.

The launch of the configurator proves that Rivian is sticking to its guns despite the challenges of scaling production. With the Performance Launch Package due to start shipping in just weeks, we won't have to wait much longer to see how the R2 handles real-world roads and the expectations Rivian has set for its first mass-market offering.
