Rivian Assistant is finally coming to the R2. Rivian Chief Software Officer Wassym Bensaid said on X that the AI assistant arrives in the R2’s next over-the-air (OTA) update, bringing full vehicle controls, personalized memory, and “native integration with Google Calendar and Gmail.”

It’s a late arrival. Rivian Assistant debuted on the R1 lineup earlier this spring, and it was expected on the R2 from day one. But R2 deliveries only began in early June, so early owners will have had their vehicles for about four months by the time it shows up.

What Rivian Assistant Can Do

The video Bensaid shared shows the assistant running in an R2 parked at a lake overlook. The driver asks for good photography spots before reaching a lodge, and the assistant points to the Pine Ridge area for wide views of the lake and valley. According to a small on-screen disclaimer, response times vary by prompt and results should be independently verified.

Beyond that demo, Rivian Assistant uses an agentic framework tied into your digital life. With Google Calendar and Gmail connected, it can remind you of meetings, navigate to your next appointment, or reschedule an event by voice. It remembers who it’s talking to and what you’ve searched for recently, and it handles natural commands like “Can you make the seats toasty for everyone except me?”

It also works with Apple Music, Spotify, Tidal and Sirius XM, and can read texts, suggest nearby stops and navigate to them or reply with a live ETA. Tesla owners will recognize these capabilities from Grok, which Rivian Assistant now competes with directly.

Rivian is also working directly with Apple and Google to bring group text messaging support to Rivian Assistant.

Local AI Processing on the R2

The R2 has the hardware to back this up and even deliver more Assistant functionality than the R1. Bensaid previously confirmed that the “R2 will have much more capable Edge AI compute (200 Sparse TOPS) and will run a local LLM.” An LLM (large language model) is the brain that lets the assistant hold a conversation. Running it locally means the R2 can process complex, natural language requests inside the vehicle, even without a cell signal.

How to Activate Rivian Assistant

Once it’s available on your R2, simply say “Okay, Rivian” or “Hey, Rivian” to wake Rivian Assistant. You can also long-press the left thumbwheel on the steering wheel, or tap the dedicated icon in the status bar on the center display.

The assistant may not stay exclusive to Rivian either. Bensaid has said talks are underway to license it to Volkswagen, which has a software joint venture with Rivian. For now, the R2 is next in line, though Bensaid didn't mention a specific rollout date.
