Rivian is gearing up for a massive transformation as it moves from being a niche luxury brand to a mainstream automotive player. While the company has already officially kicked off R2 mass production at its factory in Normal, Illinois, it turns out we haven't seen everything the new platform has to offer. In a recent interview, Rivian's top executive hinted that the R2 lineup is going to be much larger than the few trims we’ve seen so far.
Undisclosed Variants in the Pipeline
The R2 platform is officially the most important project in Rivian's history, and the company is planning to milk that architecture for all it's worth. Speaking with Reuters, CEO RJ Scaringe confirmed that several mystery models are currently under development. "There are other variants of R2, which we haven't shown," Scaringe revealed when asked if a smaller pickup truck might be in the works.
While Scaringe was careful not to spoil the surprise, he did hint at a potential performance-oriented or rugged version. "So clearly there could be an R2X. There's going to be combinations," he noted, though he added, "I want to be careful not to announce the program." This strategy mirrors what the company plans to do with the smaller R3 crossover, which already has a confirmed high-performance "R3X" sibling.
The Georgia Factory's Secret Role
A huge part of this expansion relies on Rivian's upcoming manufacturing hub in the southern United States. Just days ago, the company revised its production plans for the Georgia EV factory, opting to build it in a single, high-capacity stage of 300,000 units instead of two phases that would have unlocked an output of 200,000 units each. Scaringe highlighted that this facility is being built specifically to handle a diverse range of models.
"What we're building in Georgia allows for different variations," Scaringe told Reuters. This flexibility is crucial because Rivian needs the R2 to appeal to a wide variety of buyers to finally reach profitability. The company is already riding a wave of momentum after beating delivery estimates for the first quarter of the year, and these mystery variants could be the key to capturing even more of the market.
What We Know About the R2 So Far
While the mystery variants are exciting, Rivian already has a solid roadmap for the standard R2 SUV. The Performance trim with an exclusive Launch Package is slated to begin deliveries later this spring, priced around $58,000. Rivian has announced a “Premium” variant that’s slated to debut before the end of the year, followed by the highly anticipated “Standard Long Range” and $45,000 “Standard” versions next year.
The R2 platform is also set to power Uber's robotaxi fleet, with a deal in place to deploy up to 50,000 autonomous R2 vehicles starting in 2028. Between mass-market SUVs, ultra-performance "X" models, and potential pickup variants, Rivian is positioning the R2 to be the "Swiss Army Knife" of its fleet. If the company can successfully ramp up production despite recent setbacks like storm damage at its main factory, the next few years could see Rivian become a household name alongside the industry's biggest giants.
