Rivian is providing some clarity on the power backup capabilities of its next-generation platform. Following the recent launch of the official Rivian R2 order configurator for reservation holders, Chief Software Officer Wassym Bensaid hosted an Ask Me Anything (AMA) session on Reddit to answer burning questions from future owners as the vehicle inches closer to customer hands.

Mobile Power Ready, Home Power Coming Later

When asked on the r/RivianR2 subreddit about the upcoming vehicle's ability to power an entire house in an outage, Bensaid revealed it’s on the roadmap but won’t be available at launch.

The R2 will launch with native vehicle-to-load (V2L) support via a specialized Rivian Field Outlet accessory designed for on-the-go electronic equipment. Whole-home backup, or vehicle-to-home (V2H) capabilities, will require dedicated residential upgrades to unlock, though.

"Vehicle-to-Home (V2H) backup is a two-way street - the car handles the power export, but you still need the right companion hardware installed at your house (like a bidirectional wall charger and the correct metering hardware) to safely feed that power into your electrical panel during an outage,” Bensaid noted.

He clarified that Rivian will launch full support for whole-home backup with a dedicated residential charger and metering equipment down the line. Bensaid didn’t offer any details about these products, saying that more information will become available as Rivian gets closer to launching them. It remains to be seen if this upcoming hardware will only enable V2H functionality on the R2 or also be compatible with the R1 line.

The Impending R2 Launch

This update on V2H availability comes as Rivian prepares for a make-or-break launch. R2 mass production began at Rivian’s Normal, Illinois, factory back in April, and the company is set to kick off the first R2 customer deliveries next week on Tuesday, June 9. The initial launch will consist exclusively of the top-tier R2 Performance Launch Package trim. Rivian plans to start rolling out more options like the R2 Premium by year-end, followed by other variants next year.

Other major highlights from Bensaid's AMA session included details about the R2’s software ecosystem. The vehicle will launch with RivianOS 2.0, an upgraded operating system with a brand-new Weather app and the potential for a curated automotive app store in the future. RivianOS 2.0 will eventually also make its way to the R1 lineup, but some features — like the new Pet Cam and planned glovebox PIN lock are exclusive to the R2.
